“The Church Just Wants My Money”

by Steve Murrell

Ever heard this line: the church doesn’t care about me; it only wants my money?

People who say this are confusing the church with Starbucks or Delta Airlines or Walmart. I’m pretty sure Starbucks, Delta, Walmart, Sunglass Hut, Whole Foods and Burger King only want my money. I’m also pretty sure the church cares about much more than my money.

We don’t call our local Ford dealer when our health fails, our marriages crash, our kids rebel and our checks bounce. No, we call our church, our pastor, our church friends for help. And they respond, even if we don’t tithe or even tip. (less than half of church attendees give anything in church offerings)

If fact, when we call the church for help in the middle of our crisis, they don’t ask how much we dropped in the last offereing, they just help. Why? Because they care about us, not about our money.

Try walking out of Starbucks without paying and see how much those happy friendly smily baristas care about you. Try driving that Corolla off the lot without paying and see how much Toyota cares about
you. They’re the ones who don’t care about you; they only want your money.
