Me First

by Brett Fuller

Being “first” carries status. The place of prominence is eagerly sought yet how we get there says a lot about us.
Jesus said in Luke 14:11 “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” In other words, the principle of kingdom promotion is counter-intuitive. The way up is down and the fastest way down is up.
Humility is simply recognizing who we really are and acknowledging our role in serving mankind. A lack of humility is characterized by an elevated sense of one’s own humanity and an expectation that humanity is supposed to serve “Me”. If one practices humility he will be publically elevated and be given the privileges associated with honor. If one chooses to elevate himself, he will be, by humiliating circumstances, brought low to better understand the reality of his condition.
If the way up is down and the way down is up, it would be better to be “down” with God’s way up. Live right, live well…

Brett Fuller is the senior pastor of Grace Covenant Church in Chantilly, Virginia. He is also the founder of the Legacy Institute and the president and co-founder of African American Resource Ministry (AARM).
