Persevering Mission

jeff-bullockby Jeff Bullock

Perseverance is defined by, “continuing in a course of action or purpose without regard for difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.” Never Give Up! Never Stop! “Tough times never last but Tough People do!” Robert Schuller

Please allow me to share from a “missionary’s ” perspective. In the movie “First Knight” (starring Sean Connery as King Author and Richard Gere as Lancelot) Lancelot attempts to go through a 30 yard obstacle course of swinging blades and guillotines that few have successfully traversed. After effectively getting through the course without protective padding King Author asks in amazement, “How did you do it?” Lancelot replies, “Most men step backward when they should step forward.”

The difficult economic times globally suggests a conservative response. Cut back, step back, and retreat to safety. Unfortunately this same wisdom is being carried over into evangelism and missions commitments. Difficulty implies a response of Faith! Why do we need faith when everything is going well?

God often uses difficulty to awaken faith from it’s slumber. Paul says, “…Hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. Romans 8:24-25

Financial security isn’t our ultimate trust. God is the one who sets us “securely” on high.

– Now is the time to send missionaries into the nations.

– Now is the time to keep our commitments strong to our missionaries.

– Now is the time to give more, go more, believe more and preach repentance and faith towards God in the face of social awkwardness.

– Now is not the time to step backward into safety and conservation in the context of missions and mission’s sending.

More than simply maintaining what we have as Christian believers, let us speak to the fear of difficulty and perilous times with greater action, greater giving, greater sending and greater caring. As the blades of the economic crisis swing toward us let’s step forward in Faith rather than backward into “safety and preservation”.

If we as Christians only give and go when times are good and secure what does that say about our faith? At the same time we are not cavalier about difficulty nor take careless risks blindly lunging into swinging blades. Our risks are responses of obedience and based on the promises of God’s word…

“For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:32-33 God’s word is our comfort and security!
