The God of All Hope

by Phil Bonasso

One of my favorite scriptures in the Word of God is found in Romans 15:13: “Now may the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”.

We as believers are called to be a people of hope! The kind of hope the scriptures are referring to is not “worldly” hope. Worldly hope can be described as a contrived, optimistic feeling that emanates from the emotions of the human soul. Perhaps a better way to describe worldly hope is “wishful thinking”.

I have never been real good at wishful thinking. Maintaining a positive outlook on life with my own strength has been impossible for me. The critical, negative spirit of the world seems to always overwhelm my best attempt at positive thinking! I know some people that tell me they are optimistic by nature. I have watched the best of them eventually wear down and become cynical.

I saw a poll that was conducted the other day that more or less shows us the condition of hope in our country. The cable station MSNBC reported that 75% of the people they polled said this country, the U.S.A., was going in the wrong direction!

That’s not hard to understand considering all the dire economic circumstances that seem to be taking place. The collapse of the housing market, the price of oil, the deflating dollar, not to mention the war in Iraq, all make for a pretty hopeless outlook.

These hopeless people really don’t have a choice but to despair. The barometer of their hope, unlike supernatural Bible Hope, rises and falls with the condition of their circumstances. Their optimism is rooted in economic projections, and when these projections are dire, pessimism prevails.

Hope that flows from the Holy Spirit is so different! It’s not based on circumstances at all. The bedrock of supernatural hope is the promises of God, and His faithfulness to perform them in our lives. That’s why we as believers can have all peace and joy in the midst of the most daunting situations.

Be filled with expectation my friends. The Lord himself ensures a bright future for his people!
